Preimplantation Genetic Diagnostic Test
What is it?
PGD is a procedure used before implantation to identify any genetic defects within embryos produced through in vitro fertilization. In other words, it is a genetic screening to prevent certain disease or disorders from being passed on to the baby.
How does it work?
  • A one or two cells are removed from the embryo.
  • DNA is retrieved from the cell. Then it is copied through a process called as polymerase chain reaciton
    (PCR).
  • The DNA sequence code is evaluated and analyzed to determine if the inheritance of a problematic
    gene is found.
Diseases detected by PGD
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Thalassemia
  • Huntington disease
  • Tay Sachs disease
  • Fragile X syndrome
  • Hemophilia A&B
  • Chromosomal rearrangement such as translocation, inversion, deletions and Aneuploidy
